A number of years ago a friend of mine was in touch with the person who supplied the tape to make the "Custard Pie" 3LP set version of the show in the mide 1980's. This show was on some TDK AD cassettes and I was able to get a DAT transfer of these tapes. I took the DAT tapes and transfered them to my computer via using a standalone CD burner. With sound forge. I used the channel converter feature to deal with the fluctuation in volume levels during Rain Song and Dazed and Confused. Basically these tracks are in mono. This is the only thing did to alter the sound on this recording. The tracks on the CD were separated using Sound Forge CD Architect.
Some people have heard many different transfers of this show and consider this one a good transfer. This show is available on silver pressed boot CD's as well and the main variable on those releases is how much sound processing has been done to alter the sound.
Overall this recording is quite good for a 1973 era Led Zeppelin show and I believe this CD transfer would be comparable to any of the other raw and undoctored versions of this tape.

"A Little Bit Warm"

2 Source AUD

Eddie's Notes:

This is a combination of two audience recordings:

Source 1, Unknown gen -> DAT -> CD-R
Source 2, 3rd gen -> DAT -> CD-R

Source 1 has better sound and was used where possible. Source 2 was used for a part of Dazed and in various places between songs.

Source 1 is the better known recording, the one described by Luis Rey as "three-dimensional". The sound is nice but the recording suffers from instability in one channel, resulting in a panning effect that is quite off-putting in places. The version I have used is of unknown generation. I have come across numerous copies of this source that claim to be 2nd, 3rd gen etc., but they have sounded inferior.

There is, for example, a version available in trading circles as "2nd gen -> DAT -> CDR" on which the channel problems have been eliminated by, for the most part, throwing away the unstable channel and producing a mono version consisting of the stable channel only. Not only does this lose the impressive stereo of the recording, but it also has a detrimental effect on the overall sound quality as, for some reason, the channel with the dropouts has a warmer sound with more bottom end. I was looking forward to hearing the recent Live Remains "Cold Sweat" release as I had read some good reviews but, on listening to it, I was disappointed to find that it appeared to have been made from this "mono" version. It seems to be a commonly held opinion that this release is an improvement over previous releases such as Cobla's "Custard Pie", but I can't agree. Not for the first time, I have to conclude that people are far too quick to proclaim any new release as an upgrade without actually bothering to compare it to earlier versions.

I did consider using more of source 2 for the parts of the show that are worst affected by the channel dropouts, such as Rain Song and Dazed, but the sound is clearly inferior on source 2. It was a difficult decision, and one that had put me off tackling this show on a number of previous occasions, but my preference in the end was to use all available material from source 1. The channel dropouts are an annoyance but, in my opinion, it was much better to live with them than to get rid of them but also lose so much that is good about this recording. Those who find the channel dropouts unacceptable are welcome to disagree and to prefer other versions of the show, such as Cold Sweat.

For instance ,make 7track mark for dazed and each song mark for WLL,don't you think so?

AUD - Unknown Gen Analog - 2CDR3 - EAC - Remaster
SBD - 1st Gen Analog - DAT2 - Remaster
.
AUD source is distant muffled and muddy.. I would rate it a 4-5/10 just tried to clean it up and make it clear.
SBD source is very good. Cleaned it up and tried to give it more depth and richen the sound a tad.

SBD - 1st Gen>DAT2>1CDR2>Matrix Remaster

Source and Remastering notes: Audience - I have 2 copies of the same source. Alleged 1stGen>DAT and 2ndGen>DAT.
2ndGen sounded alot better so it was used. However it contained a small cut during Song Remains the Same.
I used the inferior alleged 1stGen to patch it. Both copies have a small cut/glitch near end of Rain Song,
SBD - sadly only 23 mins of Whole Lotta Love exist for this show. I made a test "matrix" mix with the AUD and
it sounded decent so I mixed all 23 min. SBD does have some small dropouts/glitches. Bootledz says all SBD bootleg
copies have the glitches. They could not be fixed. Both sources Enhanced with Samplitude.
No encores exist for this show. Guess you had to be there to know if they played any.

AUD - Cassette Master > DAT 1 > 3CDR4 > Remaster

Source and Remastering notes: I thought I had 2 sources for this show. Mono CassM>DAT1>3CDR which I believe was made by the Zeppelin Digital guys & Stereo CassM>PC>2CDR taped by W.W. D&C was divided on 2 discs. After close listening and comparing I came to the conclusion that the ZD guys used the W.W. Stereo source and made it mono using the Right Channel. The left channel on the stereo source had weak levels and a constant clicking noise. I think they made the right choice making it mono. I used the Mono version for this remaster and just tried to add some low end for tonal balence using some MS mastering, Waves Maxxbass and alittle cut in the upper mid level. I made the show 2CD's rather than 3. The quality of the recording I would rate VG+ it is alittle distant but very clear. Thanks to the Taper for sharing it and thanks to the ZD guys for their mastering.

Introduced as the Rock Sensation of the Year, this is an outstanding night despite the fact that John Paul Jones is apparently feeling unwell. Page is flying now, Since I've Been Loving You is performed with an amazing aggression and fluency. Plant compliments the audience: "It's very nice to be here in Vienna...you've even got some good groupies!" Dancin Days is inroduced as "a song about little schoolgirls, not too yound mind you, and my love for them...remembering what happened to Jerry Lee Lewis, I think I'll take it easy!"

Dazed and Confused is highly satisfying and afterwards, Plant sings "Happiness is a warm gun" from the Beatles white album. Stairway to Heaven also benefits from Page's new found energy, as he delivers a breathtaking final solo. For the Heartbreaker encore, Jimmy provides a spontaneous new opening arrangement, never to be aired again...

Comments:
I am pretty sure this is the same tape source that is floating around. If someone has a different recording, let me know. The cuts in The Song Remains The Same and Stairway To Heaven appear to be caused from tape flips during the concert.Transferred to CD, Spring 2006

Here's a recording that's a little below average in sound quality for the 73 European tour and yet it's still quite listenable. Jimmy plays a few notes of Satisfaction prior to starting The Song Remains The Same and the show also has The Ocean which was not common for the 73 European tour.
